Embracing Freedom: Juneteenth and How It Nourishes Our Souls
Throughout the week we celebrate Juneteenth—a celebration that radiates with the spirit of liberation and joy. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is a cherished occasion marking the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It's more than just a historical milestone; it holds profound significance for our wellness and the sacredness of every breath we take. Read the blog below for strategies to breathe well and embracing our bodily wisdom that sets us free.
By taking care of ourselves and our communities, we pay homage to the sacrifices of our ancestors and continue to propel towards a more just and equitable future.
On Juneteenth, we are reminded of the importance of wellness, for it serves as a powerful reminder that our liberation is intertwined with our health and well-being. Juneteenth is a day dedicated to healing, reflection, and embracing hope and resilience. Let us prioritize wellness and emphasize collective healing on this meaningful day through holistic approaches, including movement, breathwork, and joyful experiences.
Juneteenth Breathing Techniques:
Breathing plays a pivotal role in the journey of liberation, as it serves as a friendly and reliable companion on our path to freedom. Deep, conscious breaths not only nourish our bodies with oxygen but also become a doorway to present moment awareness and emotional liberation. By focusing on our breath, we create a space of tranquility and harmony within ourselves. This gentle act of inhaling and exhaling allows us to release pent-up tension, stress, and negative emotions, paving the way for inner peace and clarity. Moreover, conscious breathing helps us break free from the shackles of the past, enabling us to let go of limiting beliefs and patterns that hinder our growth. With each mindful breath, we embrace the essence of liberation—making empowered choices, cultivating resilience, and experiencing life's joys with an open heart.
Dirga Pranayama (Three-Part Breath):
Inhale deeply into your belly, expanding the ribcage, then the chest. Exhale slowly, releasing the breath from the chest, then the belly. Repeat this pattern for several rounds, focusing on the smooth flow of breath.
Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing):
Close your right nostril with your right thumb and inhale deeply through the left nostril. Close the left nostril with your ring finger, release the right nostril, and exhale through it. Inhale through the right nostril, close it, and exhale through the left nostril. Continue this pattern, alternating the nostrils, while maintaining a slow and steady breath.
Sama Vritti (Equal Breathing):
Inhale and exhale through your nose, focusing on equalizing the length of your inhalations and exhalations. Count to four as you inhale, then count to four as you exhale. Gradually increase the count if comfortable, finding a rhythm that feels balanced and soothing.
Lion's Breath (Simhasana Pranayama):
Take a deep inhale through your nose. As you exhale, open your mouth wide, stick out your tongue, and make a "ha" sound while simultaneously widening your eyes and stretching your fingers. Repeat this breath several times, releasing any tension or stress.
Ujjayi Pranayama (Victorious Breath):
Inhale deeply through your nose, slightly constricting the back of your throat to create a soft oceanic sound. Exhale through the nose, maintaining the gentle constriction. Focus on the sound and sensation of the breath, allowing it to anchor you in the present moment.
Remember to listen to your body and adjust the techniques as needed.
