May this month bring you peace. #MentalHealthMonth

May is a month dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Mental Health Month offers a great opportunity for us to reflect on our own mental health and that of our loved ones, as well as to learn about new developments in mental health research and treatment.

Mental health is a crucial component of overall well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and behave, and impacts our relationships, work, and daily life. Unfortunately, mental health issues are still often stigmatized, which can make it difficult for people to seek help and support.

The theme for Mental Health Month 2023, "Anxiety," aims to raise awareness and promote understanding of the impact of anxiety on individuals, families, and communities. The theme highlights the importance of recognizing the signs and symptoms of anxiety disorders, as well as the need for early intervention and effective treatment.

Looking ahead to Mental Health Month, there are several things we can all do to support our own mental health and that of our communities. Here are a few suggestions: and our recommendations.

Educate yourself

Take the time to learn about mental health issues and how they can impact individuals and communities. Read books, articles, and blogs by mental health professionals, and attend mental health workshops and events. Mental Health America is a great site for mental health resources.

Talk openly about mental health:

Start conversations with your friends and family about mental health. Share your own experiences and encourage others to do the same. By talking openly about mental health, we can reduce stigma and create a more supportive environment for those who are struggling. Take a mental health test and create conversation with your loved ones.

Seek support

If you are struggling with your own mental health, don't hesitate to seek support. Talk to a mental health professional, reach out to a support group, or confide in a trusted friend or family member. BetterHelp will match you to one of 31,000 licensed therapists based upon your location, preferences, and therapist availability. Explore BetterHelp’s network of licensed therapists.

Advocate for change

Join a mental health advocacy group or support a mental health organization. Use your voice and influence to advocate for policies and practices that promote mental health and wellness. Check out this resource from from Mental Health America on ways to advocate for change.

Practice soul hydration

Finally, take care of your own mental health by practicing soul hydration. This can include activities like exercise, mindfulness meditation, spending time in nature, or engaging in a creative hobby. Check out some soul hydrating resources here.

Mental Health Month is an important opportunity for all of us to reflect on our own mental health and that of our communities. By taking steps to educate ourselves, talk openly about mental health, seek support, advocate for change, and practice self-care, we can create a world where mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health. Remember, taking care of your mental health is a journey, and it's never too late to start.
